At Growing Connections, we believe that communication truly leads to connections. Language is a vital part of human connection and it not only serves as a means to communicate but also is critical to academic growth and social skills. Our goal at Growing Connections Therapy is to reach caregivers and families who may have concerns with their child's speech or language development. Not only is our goal to provide services to children with varying needs but also to be a resource for parents. We use evidence-based research and provide strategies and tools to enhance overall skills in the area of speech and language. We strive to provide quality services for each child and their specific needs. We take time to get to know you and your family because connecting with you is how we grow!

Specialties

Articulation/Phonology

Refers to how individuals produce speech sounds. For example, an individual may produce /th/ for /s/ and present with a lisp. Sometimes it becomes a pattern and they may have the sound, however, it varies in positions. An individual may say 'tat' for 'cat' and 'do' for 'go'.

Stuttering

Refers to the way words and phrases flow together when we speak. For example, when in a large crowd, an individual may present with repetitions of sounds 'ccccat' when producing a word. We can provide strategies to use when speaking.

Social/Pragmatic

Refers to skills that may be different from others. Difficulty with conversational skills, problem-solving, figurative language, and much more. At times, we might work on teaching what are some ways to navigate these differences and provide opportunities for skills to grow.

Language

Receptive language refers to the ability to understand spoken and written language and expressive language refers to the ability to use spoken language. For example, an individual who has difficulty with reading/listening comprehension may work with an SLP to increase this skill.

Alternative Communication

Refers to oral, manual, augmentative, and alternative communication (AAC) techniques, and assistive technologies (AT). For example, an individual who has difficulty communicating verbally may work with an SLP to learn to use an AAC system to increase their communication abilities.

Feeding Aversion

Refers to the avoidance of food because it is psychologically linked with an unpleasant, stressful, frightening, or painful experience. Reasons could include sensory deficits such as disliking various textures, oral motor weaknesses such as pushing bolus back and use of correct chew pattern, and much more. We may assist to provide exercises and a safe sensory approach to increase food intake.
